Stepping out, he could hear for miles.
There was someone down at the lake. The house itself was unoccupied.
The screen doors were unlatched at both ends. While the road went on further still, he hadn’t seen another house since turning off the tarmac.
Off in the distance, there was the sound of a solitary outboard motor. Through a narrow gap in the trees, there were the white dots of gulls, sitting motionless on the impossible blue of the water. Interesting—he could hear them, from all this way. Tiny little noises, but they were there.
This particular lake was about six miles long and skinny, maybe a mile wide in places. Five thousand, two hundred and eight feet or whatever.
The thing to do was to relax, to have a good time, and enjoy the scenery. Eat some good food, drink some beer and maybe just listen for a while…
He dumped his gear, a hefty gym bag plus one small suitcase, and used the bathroom. He’d been hanging onto that one for a while, bladder complaining when he was just a few miles away and in unknown territory. He’d made it, after all. Life was a series of compromises, flying in close formation.
Out of the air-conditioned vehicle, outside of the cabin, also air-conditioned, it was a hot and sultry day.
So, what to wear?
He still had a minute to think.
He changed into shorts, and his battered old assault sandals as he called them—big clunky things, but all the rage a few years back. Too many years back, in point of fact. He had a black sleeveless undershirt that was very small and tight, leaving a bare patch of tanned midriff exposed…a thin gold chain around the neck, and a quick gloss with the lip-balm, cherry-flavoured.
Spritz on the stinky stuff and he was all ready to go.
Finding a towel in the bathroom closet, he shoved his wallet under the mattress of what was clearly a spare bedroom, once quickly compared to the other, bigger one. The one that had a more occupied sense or smell to it.
It was going to have to do.
